Best Technology by Country Map [Chart Review]

There is a big difference between the online and print version of this data visualization. The one above was taken from the online version and shows the different segments of technology for various countries. I’m not a big fan of the interactive column chart when you hover over each country. By the way, in the print version all of the charts are shown above each country making the comparison a little easier. In both versions, the column chart has tiny bars within the columns to make up the total and is broken out into increments of ten. This feature is totally unnecessary because A) the values are below the chart and B) the columns look cleaner when the columns are solid. Also, I would make the gap between columns smaller to utilize the space better and make the comparison easier.
Something to think about: I might just add the actual values (on the mouse-over or click) to the boxes at the top of the screen? That would eliminate the need for the column chart altogether and leave more room for the map. What do you think?
Do you like the spaces in between each mark making it look like a tiny ladder?
