Reverse Analytics

You’ve heard it here first!  Even Wikipedia doesn’t have it listed.  If you have worked in corporate America in the last decade or so, you’ve probably seen reverse analytics in action.  Reverse analytics is where you have the result and need the analysis to prove the solution.  From experience, I have seen this too many times with people who are separated from the actual data.

Just recently, I worked with someone who already made a major business decision, then wanted an impact analysis done to see how employees downstream would be affected.  This is a perfect example of what not to do!  Use available data and take the time for proper analysis to make fact-based decisions instead of going with your gut or intuition.  I can understand doing some exploratory analysis where you are looking to see where the data takes you.  Just don’t make an important decision and then try to support it.
